Those other cruisers

On our first (and only to date) cruise | MS Noordam... from our tender boatI am an ambivalent cruiser. For travel in areas with a lot of water where ferry travel would be a logistical pain (Baltics, Mediterranean), I see it as a good mode of transportation and a convenient way to unpack once. And I must admit I like certain aspects — long leisurely dinners, namely.

But when we’re visiting the destinations that are the star of my trip it’s easy to forget that I myself am on a cruise, and get a little huffy about the hordes of tourists the other boats are disgorging.

The handy CruiseCal web site has provided me with a heads up about how many other cruisers we’ll be battling with to see the sights throughout the Med.

We’re on the Celebrity Galaxy. It looks like we have Rhodes to “ourselves ” — everwhere else we’ll be docking with one or two other ships.

  1. I too have been poring over in recent months – I am also on Galaxy this summer. I found out some really bad news – Galaxy would be one of 5 (!) ships at Santorini on our scheduled day there. That cablecar up to Fira has a capacity of 1200 people per hour, and given that some 5000+ cruisers were scheduled to arrive between 7am & 9am (or thereabouts), something obviously wouldn’t fit.

In the event Celebrity has re-routed the Aegean part of our cruise – instead of Mykonos; Kusadasi; Santorini; Rhodes; Athens we are now doing Athens; Mykonos; Kusadasi; Rhodes; Santorini. And in two or three of the calls, including Santorini, Galaxy is the only ship calling that day. So I’m a happy cruiser.

Please look after Galaxy while you’re on board : we’re on the cruise after yours!
